1. Line Spacing

Different fonts are different sizes.

Different fonts have various widths and spacing. Times New Roman is the more compact font, and will fit more words on a page than Arial or Verdana.I've found that Times New Roman tends to fill up more pages than Arial or Verdana.

For Example: If you use Times New Roman, you will need approximately one page of text for every 500 words; whereas if you use Arial, you will need slightly more.

4. Margins

Typical margins are 1 inch around all sides. The larger the margins the less writing space left and the fewer words per page. Narrower margins provide more writing space and permit more words to be accommodated.

Most academic and business documents are set to 1-inch margins because they offer a neat and easy to read format to the document.

5. Paragraph Length

Use short paragraphs for more white space. Long paragraphs are more efficient with space use.

A page that includes a lot of short paragraphs, bullet points, headings or section breaks will have fewer words than a page that includes a lot of paragraphs.

This is particularly vital for blog posts and Web pages where readability is more important than cramming as much content as you can into one page.

6. Headings, Lists, and Visual Elements

Using headings, bullet lists, tables, charts, images and callout boxes to break up a page reduces the number of words.

This is not an issue if the content is online. In many cases, headings and lists can enhance the user experience. However, when printing they can add more pages.

The average page size in Microsoft Word is 1 inch margins, 12-point Times New Roman, single spacing, at 500 words.

The same page will have approximately 250 words on each page, double spaced.
